YORUBA PEOPLE

YORUBA PEOPLE

– The enduring civilization that traverses the world

Yoruba is one of the prevalent ethnic groups in West Africa. The primary Yoruba language speakers live in southwestern Nigeria, east-central and southeastern regions of Benin Republic. However, Yoruba communities are found in sizeable numbers across the West African subcontinent in countries like Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, and Gambia. Yoruba is reportedly spoken by about 40 million people in Nigeria and 25 million people in the other parts of the world. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade dispersed Yoruba people as far as the Caribbean and South America, in places like Cuba, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Guyana, and Suriname. The Yoruba in the diaspora are also found in large numbers in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
