THE ELEGANCE OF YORUBA LANGUAGE

THE ELEGANCE OF YORUBA LANGUAGE

– Insight into Yoruba People’s Etymology

YORUBA: Àgbò t’ó f’ẹ̀hìn rìn, agbára ló lọ mú wá.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY DELE AJAJA: The ram that paces backward goes for reinforcement.

CLARIFICATIONS: Ram needs some space to charge at its opponent during a fight. It appears like it is withdrawing while pacing backward, but it is (tactically) creating the space for charging at its rival. This saying is useful when someone takes a breather during a discussion, competition, or dispute, to gather his/her bearings.
