– Blazing the Trail for Others to Follow
“Leadership” is synonymous to “Responsibility.” A “leader” is the man or woman with the aptitude and attitude for guiding or influencing a group. Customarily, the leader is the “front man/woman” (the pathfinder,) who leads the people out of the jungle of hopelessness, by challenging the regressive status quo. We shouldn’t misconstrue that with the one who simply walks in the front. Leadership is not always about walking ahead of a group. Some of the time, the individual(s) in the front could be mere cannon fodder(s), strategically placed for the purpose of sheltering the real leader(s).
At times, some of the folks in the front are mere “rulers,” imprecisely addressed as “leaders.” Leadership outstrips the ephemeral presence of power, lights, cameras, microphones, shimmering convoys, and overzealous entourages. It exceeds dwelling in a marble castle adjacent to the shantytown crammed by the indigent people. It is about rolling up one’s sleeves and “carrying” the people and their encumbrances on one’s back. Leadership is about being dependable; it is about embracing transparency, accountability, and integrity. Irrefutably, the “leader” is NOT the guy who treads on others; he or she is the one who uplifts others.
